Only interactive objects are made of Lego bricks. The game is set in Gotham City, with mainly realistic environments.

Using attack combinations in combat will multiply the amount of studs earned. The player controls any one of a wide assortment of characters from a third-person perspective, primarily fighting enemies, solving puzzles, and collecting Lego “studs”, the game’s form of currency. The core gameplay of Lego Batman is similar to that of previous Lego video games, such as Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures and the Lego Star Wars series. It’s up to the famed Caped Crusader to sweep Gotham clean of criminal activity using everything at his disposal, including crime-fighting vehicles as well as several baddie-bashing bat gadgets.

A stampede of notorious criminals have busted out of Arkham Asylum, where Gotham City houses only the shadiest of characters.
